EGR stands for Exhaust Gas Recirculation, and it involves circling a proportion of the engine’s exhaust air back into the air intake system. The EGR system works by sending a portion of inactive gas back through the cylinders of the vehicle which, therefore, ejects unimportant toxins into the surrounding environment. This process will reduce the heat of combustion, but the same amount of pressure will still be applied to the piston while minimising the amount of excess oxygen before the combustion.
Some studies that were conducted on diesel engines show that the amount of nitrous oxide gas emitted is reduced when an EGR is used on the vehicle. This can, however, increase the concentrations of smoke density which mean that there are positives and negatives of the service depending on the vehicle.
Normally, an engine circles it’s exhaust gas by piping to the inlet manifold from the exhaust manifold. This is called external EGR.
A control valve (also known as an EGR valve) inside the circuit, times and regulates the level of gas flow. A few engines have a camshaft which has a relatively large overlap, and this happens when the intake valve and exhaust valve are open. This traps the exhaust gas inside the cylinder, but it doesn’t entirely remove the gas during the exhaust stroke.
The EGR in your vehicle is always dealing with burnt exhaust gases, and they have naturally high soot content. This soot can cause a buildup of carbon deposits around the area of operation in the valve which can cause the valve to stick in various positions occasionally. For maximum engine performance, the EGR valve remains closed to create a loop environment which allows the turbo system to pressurise. If an EGR is problematic, it can create an open loop environment for the turbo system, and this can cause boost issues and reduction in power as well as affecting the fuel economy.
Getting your EGR deleted can prove very beneficial, and it is made clear when driving your car and putting your foot down. The primary benefit of EGR removal is that your engine’s power will be fully restored meaning that you will have an increased boost when driving. Other benefits include; restored miles per gallon meaning that your fuel will last for longer, fewer soot deposits in the valve meaning cleaner emissions and the prevention of DPF failure due to soot being caught in the DPF trap.
All in all, having your EGR delete software can save you money and improve the performance of your car both in the short run and in the long term. If you think you need an EGR delete in Kent, why not get in touch?
